DIRECTOR'S STUDIO WITH ERIC OWEN MOSS

In collaboration with Sungmi Hyun

The development behind this project revolves around a combination of three conditions: an elevated mass, the cantilever which implies enclosure along the plane below, and a minimal footprint. The intention behind this design strategy is to offer an optimized use of the ground plane by elevating the mass above the ground, breaking the stagnate pattern of the surrounds and offering a space useful to the surrounding community.

The images below illustrate part of the extensive investigations that we performed towards the development of the final design while maintaining true to the initial three conditions.

The formal strategy consists of four masses placed above the site, two on each side, which help define the perimeters of the outdoor theater space below along the ground plane. Below this ground plane is a two level parking garage, who's column grid extends up through the ground and provides the structural support for the elevated masses. This linear presence becomes a wire above ground and takes on a more aggressive role as it moves higher past the masses, bends and wraps around their boundaries, eventually tying one side of the project to the other. As the wires impose their force onto the forms, a fifth mass was introduced into the center of the wires. The intention here was to present an element that could further exploit the implied force of tension, causing the masses to convey the illusion of objects in collapse.

A structural system, to connect the masses, was then introduce to span in between all four masses. The truss system acts as a visual counterforce, not literal. The strength and rigidity of the truss serves as an oppositional visual counterforce to the effect of the wires in tension. As the wires aim to bound the masses tighter together, the truss serves as the determined member to stop the collapse of the boxes.
